SACES Graduate Student April Meeting Poll

    Hello Fellow Graduate Students!

Wow how things have changed since our last meeting!  I know this message may find many of you in an odd place, as we have all been navigating life under new expectations with the COVID-19 pandemic.

First, I want to let you know that you are not alone!  As fellow graduate students, I'm sure that many of us are facing similar challenges.  I would like to offer our next meeting as a way for us to come together and feel supported.  We will continue the same line of business as last month, as we did not have enough people join (most likely from effects of COVID-19).  However, more than anything, I would like to offer this meeting as a platform to discuss concerns, offer resources or just have a meeting of like minds.

Please take time to complete the doodle poll to designate the best time for you to meet.  This poll will close on April 6th at 5 :00 PM CDT.  Again, we will discuss the agenda presented last month, so you should have access to that from our previous message.  However, I want to focus on support of one another and how we can come together during this time.

Please email me if you have questions or concerns.  I look forward to meeting with all of you next month!

    Warmly,

Hannah M. Coyt, LPCC-S, NCC, CCMHC

    ·       Have the opportunity to participate in large group experiences held concurrent with SACES 2020 and ACES 2021 conferences.

In recognition of their contributions to SACES, ELs received a complimentary workshop and luncheon, business luncheon ticket, and registration for the SACES 2020 Conference.

    Eligibility

The EL program is open to all active SACES graduate student members or first-year new professionals at the time of application. We especially encourage applications from individuals who are seeking opportunities to develop leadership skills and strongly committed to SACES vision related to inclusivity, community, and social justice in counselor education and supervision. The review committee especially welcomes candidates who identify with historically marginalized groups and will heavily consider applications spanning varying and diverse experiences. Selection criteria include:

    March Webinar

Advocacy Considerations for LGBTQ+ Youth and Youth of Color in K-12 Public Schools

    Danielle McGarrh, LPC-Intern, NCC

    Thursday, March 19th 12pm-1pm EST
    Register through Zoom

Despite some progress, LGBTQ+ youth are still excluded from many state protections. This reality places equity out of reach for this marginalized student population, particularly youth of color, and jeopardizes student safety. Counseling professionals are uniquely positioned to counter these barriers, yet many feel their role is /webinars or are unsure of their own rights within their organization. This presentation takes this seemingly grey dilemma and reveals a clearer path forward for ensuring a safer and more supportive environment for our precious LGBTQ+ youth.

    Webinar objectives:

    1. After this presentation, attendees will be able to utilize professional ethics codes to guide their respective professional roles.

    2. After this presentation, attendees will be able to evaluate their organization for strengths and weaknesses and competently implement best practices.

    3. After this presentation, attendees will be able to summarize increased risk factors for LGBTQ+ youth of color.

    4. After this presentation, attendees will be able to implement advocacy actions in their respective states.

    • Danielle McGarrh is a Licensed Professional Counselor Intern working with the LGBTQ+ population. She is a second-year counselor education and supervision doctoral student at Texas A&M University-Commerce, where she works as a graduate assistant-research. She serves on the board of the Texas Counselors for Social Justice, is the founder of the peer-led counseling advocacy group, Counselor Advocates Learning to Lead (CALL), and a recent recipient of the TACES Outstanding Advocacy Award.
*Note: This webinar will be recorded and available for later viewing after 1 month on the SACES Webinar Page. Attendees who are present for the full webinar time can receive CE credit*
