From the Editor’s Desk
I am incredibly honored to serve as the Editor of Teaching and Supervision in Counseling (TSC), the flagship journal of the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (SACES). To mention my joy and excitement at this critical role for research, scholarship, advocacy, and activism would be an understatement. Assuming the role of Editor realizes my personal connection to research and scholarship that ultimately remind me of community. Indeed, the TSC editorial leadership and editorial board are a reflection of that spirit. For many years, we have aimed to cultivate a spirit of community, mentorship, and relationships within the editorial board and among counseling scholars. With intentions to grow the research acumen of neophyte and seasoned scholars, this spirit is at the heart of this journal, and that is the exact reason why I felt called to serve in this capacity. Additionally, serving in the critical role of TSC Editor cements an ongoing legacy, and I am grateful to follow in the steps of Dr. Kelly L. Wester and Dr. W. Bradley McKibben, who have established a powerful infrastructure and legacy with their wisdom, innovation, mentorship, passion, and, most importantly, joy since the journal began in 2018. As the TSC journal continues to grow beyond the SACES region across regional, national, and international audiences, the journal represents an innovative outlet that pushes the envelope of counseling, counselor education, and supervision while maintaining standards for high-quality scholarship. Along with my colleagues Dr. Erin C. M. Mason and Dr. Brooke Wymer, I aim to maintain the strengths that have distinguished TSC as an impactful and rigorous platform for scholarship. While we will continue to consider manuscripts across the diverse spectrum of counselor education and supervision practices, I am envisioning possibilities across the following themes to keep expanding the journal and make it relevant for our community stakeholders. In this way, I am hoping that we can continue to do justice to, for, and with community. As a result, I would be especially interested in manuscripts that align with the following themes:
- Interdisciplinary Research
- Critical Paradigms and Methodologies
- Community Engagement
- Culturally Sustaining Practices
Finally, I would like to reiterate my gratitude for Dr. W. Bradley McKibben, the outgoing Editor of TSC. As a result of Dr. McKibben’s leadership, the journal has surfaced as a prominent jewel of scholarship and a timely resource across a diverse range of audiences. Under Dr. McKibben’s leadership, we have been able to strengthen our reach and peer review workflows to maintain competitive acceptance rates and decrease the average time under review. Additionally, the journal has become an emblem for recognition, including features of TSC authors receiving the ACES Research in Counselor Education and Supervision Award, along with the introduction of the TSC Outstanding Article and TSC Reviewer of the Year Awards. We have also been successful in onboarding numerous graduate student editorial board members from doctoral programs nationally through a mentorship program. We were also indexed across multiple outlets (e.g., Directory of Open Access Journals) due to the establishment of the TSC Policies and Guidelines on Publication Ethics and Research Integrity (https://trace.tennessee.edu/tsc/publication_ethics.html). These accomplishments are not an exhaustive list, but the burgeoning success of the journal would not have been possible without Dr. McKibben’s leadership and tenacity as Editor from 2021 to 2025. For that, I will forever be grateful.
In solidarity,
Christian D. Chan, PhD, NCC
